A New Horizon – Transforming the Old Airport

our story

1939-2019

Take a trip down memory lane to the early days before the founding of the State of Israel. Envision the modest inception of a southern airport, followed by the iconic story of the Ink Flag, marking the end of the War of Independence, paving the foundation of the City of Eternal Sun-Eilat.

Picture Eilat’s early days- a sparse collection of homes and a lone hotel, all gradually blossoming around the central airport with its perimeter wall that divided the city from the tourist and hotel zone.

Remember that wall? The one that slightly lengthened your trips to the North Beach or back to your hotel.

The airport became more than a hub, it evolved into a landmark of Eilat, threading itself into the city’s narrative.

The old Dakota airplane, ever-present by the roadside, remains unforgettable. A steadfast icon to all who passed by and a silent witness to countless stories and adventures. The joy of catching that first aerial glimpse of Eilat’s unique, stunning views, exciting landings and the smiles that spread across our faces as we touched down home.

2019-2020

Following an impressive 70 years of dedicated service, Eilat’s iconic airport closed its doors, transitioning operations to the new Ramon International Airport. The decommissioning of the old airport marked an historic turning point for the city. It eliminated the decades-old “divided zones,” providing a unique opportunity to seamlessly unite the different areas of the city. In a final tribute, before the perimeter wall was dismantled, local artists were called upon to transform the old airport’s wall into vibrant canvases of local artwork.

2020-2022

Suddenly Eilat finds itself with a new opportunity. A vast empty space, right in the middle of the city…leaving us with a big question, what should we do with this new urban canvas? Eilat Municipality turned to the locals for inspiration, in a community-wide brainstorm. The resounding response? The majority of residents envisioned an open park, a free space for  recreation and relaxation, a place to meet-up and enjoy a range of fun activities.
